Well we now have another human bubba (Siahn - a girl born in May) and many more four legged ones. We have 8 miniature horses, it's gone down, at the end of last year it was 12!!! We've got two more to sell (Spook and her GORGEOUS colt who was born in October I think) and then I SERIOUSLY need to work on some. I'm gonna break Valentine in for Siahn to start riding and Rudey as well and make sure that Butterscotch is ridden regularly again. Caelan was asking (begging!) to ride Butterscotch today but he'd been spewing all night and was super tired so I told him he could another day when he wasn't so grumpy and tired. He then told me in the sweetest, happiest sounding voice "Mama I'm not grumpy and tired at all". So cute, but it didn't change the fact that he'd been Mr Grumpy Arse all day and constantly complaining of tiredness and really not himself after mucho vomit and very littleo sleep. So another day it will be.

We now have 7 thoroughbreds - two of them aren't ours - Rocky and Cody are grazing here owned by a couple of girls who work at the trainer across the road. Though they're pretty much ours, they haven't visited them in a looooong time, probably six months for Rocky and longer for Cody. Annnnd Cody's owner hasn't paid us since fuck knows when. Meh. She assures me that she'll be catching up on Friday, yeah sure, heard it all before. Our ones are Maddy (sweet little Maddy who desperately needs to be gotten back into work and possibly sold - but we love her), Mickey (have been riding him and all was going well, though he's slightly lame at the moment due to stuffed hooves), Jimmy (lovely wee boy whose owners were going to send him off for "dog tucker" if he didn't find a home) - there's nothing wrong with him (well apart from having a HUUUUGE buck! hehe), Daisy (she's Sola's lovely girl that she doesn't have the time for in amongst all of her billions of others, so we're looking after her and Chris will ride her cause she's awesome and quiet) and lastly Dan (not good for racing, lovely boy though if not slightly jumpy and fiddlingly annoying!).

The sheep have gone up the road to a lady from Playgroup, she has 3 acres that she was going to get some sheep to keep it down. We just don't have the fencing for them and Code was bloody dangerous and very fuckin bunty. He had to be tethered all the time which wasn't nice for him or if he was off outside of the house paddock she had to be tethered to keep him from wandering out. They couldn't ever be off as they'd get through the fencing and wander, we already had the neighbours call once to let us know they were down the road. So rather than them be hit by a car we found them a new home. It was sad and I still miss them and get sad. Caelan asks if we're going to bring them home again and I'd love to! If we had the fencing I would in a heartbeat. When we visit them they still know my call and baaaaa crazily at me - it's lovely, but only makes it harder cause I want to bring them home :(

Will post some pics sometime soon.

The whole 22 acres are now usable!

This is a HUGE accomplishment for us and we're so proud! We can now use all paddocks - we've done the fencing in all the back and side paddocks that weren't able to be used until 2 weeks ago. It feels so good. One of them doesn't have a proper fence on one side, we just used electric fence tape while they were in there for the last week. It's been so good to have them in there, though as it's been ungrazed for so long and was so overgrown they really didn't have that much real grass. But we had them in there at a week at a time to eat it down so at least grass can start growing back and hopefully we'll get there in a couple more cycles. So the big horses are back up the top now, but only in one paddock rather than the whole four! We fixed the fencing down the side last weekend and put in a couple of fences that weren't there. We have electric fence tape over the raceway/gate type area to keep them in there. It's not electrified at the moment as up until this point we haven't had an energiser - BUT we do now! Bought on today. On credit card - ek, ah well it's needed. The 8 minis are currently on the driveway (and have been for the last week) to eat that down. We'll move them into the paddock with the big horses soon, maybe in a couple of days so the big ones get a good feed of the new grass first. Seeing as though wee ones don't need as much. It's feels great though to work it all properly. So we'll be moving them along the top paddocks as they run out of grass (fixing the fences in the next one in between as they all need to be fixed and have a small amount fenced that didn't have fence). Then they'll come back into the big paddock - which by then we will have split into 3 paddocks, move through them and then back into the back and side. WAHOOO!!!! We'll keep the driveway on the rotation for the minis to keep that down too. It's all feeling so good. Yay :) Dunno when we'll have time to do the next fencing with a toddler and newborn but we just have to find a way because I'm thinking the paddock they're in will only last a couple of weeks. So that's where we're at paddock wise and it's pretty damned cool!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/SBvvkLXGsFI/AAAAAAAAAqY/gFwdu8bZ_HA/s400/27.04.08A.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196009999906025554" />
This is Ned after a week or so of his new feeding.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/SBvvkbXGsGI/AAAAAAAAAqg/zE3ncc9bJ-c/s400/27.04.08B.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196010004200992866" />
My Mickey with his eeny weeny friend Belle.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/SBvvkbXGsHI/AAAAAAAAAqo/yK1adnwYtKg/s400/27.04.08C.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196010004200992882" />
All the horses in the huge paddock.

Ned's weight gain regime

Last week we started Ned's weight gain program to try and fatten him up before winter. It consists of being fed twice a day - he's having fibrepro with 3 scoops of hard-feed and oil. We've started with just 1/4 of a cup of canola oil and are slowly working up to a cup. Hopefully this works and he puts on a lot of condition before it gets really cold. He's also covered now, just with his autumn cover which is a jute lined canvas one. He's already seeming much happier and more energetic which is great. All the horses are loving it actually, we always make sure to give Mickey and Maddy a few handfuls, but everyone else gets some too. Well not all the small ones, but all the biggies get a little bit, not as much as our Mickey and Maddy, but they all get some. It's a bit of a feeding frenzy out there at feeding time. We get Neddy in and he eats in the house paddock while they all clamber around the fences willing us to give them some. I stupidly didn't take any before photos! ARGH!!! But I'll try to remember to take some soon, as soon as it stops raining.

YES! We have rain!!!! It started in the weekend and is still going. It's sooooo awesome and will be so good for the poor parched paddocks. Wahoo!

We currently have 7 big horses (4 grazing and our 3) and 8 little ones. They're all together in the massive paddock next the house, we're letting the front grow for winter. We're about to move them all to the back - but still have fencing to do! Just bought some more fencing wire to hopefully get this done in the weekend. Last weekend we fixed up the back boundary fence which was great - just gotta tighten one side of it and then it's all done. Have to get some electric fence tape, an energiser and probably more standards for one area. The rest we'll be fixing with wire and battens (which we're seriously running low on and have to buy more. EEEKKK!).

Ohhhh AND for the last month or so Toa has been having oil added to his food. It was my desperate attempt to get some weight on him and my god it works! He's looking better than he's ever looked, no more backbone showing through and good coverage over his ribs. He'll be looking fantastic soon - wa-fucking-ho! We've also found out about a good working dog feed from the local horse and stock feed shop. It sounds really similar to the Pro Plan Performance for working dogs that we used to feed him. But at $117 for 17kg that had to stop shortly after we moved here, we just couldn't keep it up. But this food is apparently just as good (I've compared the ingredients and nutritional information and that's on par) and the dogs like it as much. Soooooo that's what we'll be buying once they've finished what they're currently eating.

Mawhero has had her operation (a couple of months after Toa's one) and her recovery isn't going as well. She had to go back in last weekend (op was on Wednesday) due to swelling and ripping the drain and some stitches out. Well it continued to swell and she had to go back in today to get put under again to have it drained out and another drain put in and more stitches. Crickey this has been an expensive exercise but hopefully this works and she is on the road to recovery.

The paintin's nearly a done!

WA-FUCKING-HOO!!!! We had a productive Easter weekend, we FINALLY finished the painting. It feels sooooo much better as well, though the list of things to do is still huuuuuuuge. But at least the painting is finished (well nearly! LOL). We did the entrance, laundry and our bedroom and it all looks great. Our bedroom was the most satisfying because we did it in a colour we love, it's the only room that is a colour we like and would have done ourselves. The rest is an icky yellow cream, it's still a damned sight better than what it was, but not really our kinda colour. Because our room was last we used the final cream as a base and added a bit of brown and a little less grey - it's a lovely natural, modern light earthy greyish brown. hehe Funny enough, before we moved, we got all the swatches and were picking a colour for the inside - our first choice was just like this. It's sooooo nice - we would LOVE it if the rest of the house was this colour. Really nice. Ah well, you can't have it all right?!? Now I just wanna get the huge desk and computer out of our room - the room would look so much nicer without it. But converting the shed into an office just aint really up there in priority unfortunately. So it'll more than likely be a next summer job.

We've moved the horses, they're all in the big paddock next the house - well they're all supposed to be!!! Fucking maggot miniatures just aren't staying where they're supposed to be! They're roaming the whole property, they push out of the unbattened section of the fence and do what they please. It's so damned annoying - we'd hoped we could fix that this weekend but it just couldn't happen. Hopefully the feckers don't go over to the neighbours. Mutter, mutter, mutter. It's so nice having big horses right next to the house though, I love looking out to them and going out for some horse love - they're real, these little ones just aren't real horses to me. Oh Butterscotch has gone back up north - she got way, way, way too fat and foundered. Poor girl, so she's gone back up to the starvation paddock. No more riding for Caelan. Though I will start working Rudie now and break him in, so hopefully he'll be ready for riding soon.

Chris has a Ned

Chris now has a horse of his own - a lovely old thoroughbred gelding called Ned. He's great and enjoying being here. Chris lunges and then rides him both days in the weekend and they're both doing really well. Ned is awesome and knows his stuff which is great - they're both getting to know each other well. We got him from a friend of mine from Caelan's Playgroup, she didn't have the time for him anymore and felt sorry for him being wasted in the paddock with no friends. So he's here now with heaps of friends and loving it. Hopefully he'll put on condition like all these fatties here - all the other horses are very ROUND and full of themselves. So hopefully he'll put on condition before winter comes. So we now have six big horses up the front and nine little horses - not that they're in the paddock they're supposed to be. Buggers! They keep going through the ditch to the big horses paddock. What we're gonna do this weekend, is put them all in the paddock next to the house, put a fence up where the fuckers are getting through and give the front a chance to grow some new grass and they can all eat down this paddock. Then we'll put them in there once it's eaten down here.

The sheep are great - annoying but great! Code is really being a shit lately - he's taken to bunting me as well as Caelan. It's cause I always move them and bring them treats and when I don't have a treat for him he gets shitty about it. We've had a few fights but things are ok - so far. Shitty bloody ram!

We've still got fuckloads to do! It's so disheatening because the new baby will be here in about 6 weeks and we have to finish the painting and do heaps. Just so hard when the wee one around - just can't do the stuff we need to. ARGH! Wish we could put him in a cage for a day and do some work! LOL It's hard not having family around to send him to so we can get stuff done in the weekends. Ah well - hopefully it gets done. We've getting inundated with mice and rats again and have to do something about that this weekend - bastard things, I hate them!

Well here are some photos of choggy a week before we set him free and one of the swallows in the front doorway, along with some of Ned a couple of weeks after getting here.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R97ieKDqs6I/AAAAAAAAAnI/qVmKzGgqCbA/s400/18.03.08A.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178825629246337954" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R97ieqDqs7I/AAAAAAAAAnQ/yoWX3-a_Wuk/s400/18.03.08B.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178825637836272562" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R97ieqDqs8I/AAAAAAAAAnY/h4Ew2A0IX8w/s400/18.03.08C.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178825637836272578" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R97ie6Dqs9I/AAAAAAAAAng/n3ViU5ENQ0A/s400/18.03.08D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178825642131239890" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R97ifKDqs-I/AAAAAAAAAno/TXQj4BBIc0Q/s400/18.03.08E.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178825646426207202" />

Choggy's getting better!

We have been treating and looking after a hedgehog for the last 3 weeks and he's really improving. It's so great to see. I need to take a photo of him soon - haven't taken a before photo. He was such a sad sight when we first found him. He had hardly any spikes left, only a small spot right at the bottom of his back and his was all scabby and scaley with some raw areas. Poor little guy and the worst of it was he had maggots all over him and in his ears. Heaps of them! His ears were just a horrible while swirling mass of maggots. UGH! It was horrible, he was getting eaten from the inside out. Chris thought that he was so close to death it was kinder to chop his head off with the spade. It would be quick and he would be out of his misery. It made me sad to think so but I agreed, I wanted to give him some milk first though. Well, when we gave him a drink he gobbled it all up frantically and I said we couldn't kill him, he must be ok to drink that hungrily, Chris agreed and off I came inside to search the internet. After some research I learned that he has mange (a very bloody severe case!) and the fly-blow isn't actually that uncommon, in fact it's common. So I read up on how we should treat him, while shouting out bits and pieces to Chirs - first thing was taking the milk off him and swapping it for water! I always remember being told as a kid to give hedgehogs milk because they like it, well this is true - they love it, but it's not good for them. So while he was frantically drinking water, Chris was cleaning him with a water and savlon solution I'd made and then started the horrible task of picking all the maggots off him and out of his ears. God Chris is a bloody good person! I couldn't get too close because I nearly vomited when I did, I'm not the best with yucky things at the best of times - when pregnant I'm just gonna vomit everywhere. After a long de-maggoting he was washed again and we put a mixture of tea-tree oil and baby oil all over him, the tea-tree oil to kill the mange and baby oil to soften his scaley bits. He's been eating a bowl of cat biscuits a day along with drinking a bowl of water a day - he's put on heaps of weight and looks so much better. Chris had to de-maggot him twice more after that time while the horrid little things made their way out of his ears. He also got a horrible hole in his head that was maggot infested a week or so after we found him. So his box has had a sheet over it and tucked in to keep the bastard flies out. He lives in a box in the woodshed and I'm sure he feels a billion times better. Apparently the spikes can take a month or so to grow back, but his skin is looking good, he's got more condition and he's moving more - horray for Choggy! I'll post a photo of him soon.

Plums, plums and more plums

We have five plum trees on the property AND we haven't even had the runs yet - how lucky is that?!?! hehe I don't know how we've missed it because I thought it was gonna happen for sure. But thankfully no :) Four of them are Billington plum trees (this is what we think anyway based on our research!), which have nice sized fruit with deep red skin with rich red flesh and oh so yummy, slightly tart. They're the first to ripen and you better be quick to get em because once they're ripe - that's it! We had a lot from each tree but there were HEAPS, all trees were pretty laden and we left it a little long to pick them all and start making jam and bottling. Alas the birds were very well fed :) The last plum tree is a Wilsons Early, it has smallish yellow with red skin and yellow flesh and ripens later in the season than the others so we had the first and now the next ones are just starting to ripen. It's great! Today we picked a bucket full, poor Chris climbed the tree and got attacked by it's spikes. Plum trees aren't very friendly! We have made our first batch of plum jam, preserved plums and plum juice. YUMMO!!!

Billington plums just before ripening.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sJCYzIO7I/AAAAAAAAAdc/ZHbCb3MvV4U/s400/26.01.08A.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159727734704323506" />

Chris up the Wilsons Early tree.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sJC4zIO8I/AAAAAAAAAdk/81i6wuFYyNY/s400/26.01.08B.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159727743294258114" />

Our homegrown and homemade plum jam and preserved whole plums. YUMMO SCRUMMO!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sJC4zIO9I/AAAAAAAAAds/SFBWbltTavU/s400/26.01.08C.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159727743294258130" />

What else have we done... well we've painted the front entrance and hallway, as well as the bathroom and toilet. It all looks sooooo much better. I don't know why I haven't taken photo's of that. But will sometime soon and post them - I haven't even taken photo's of the kitchen and lounge which we finished ages ago! Opsy - I'll get onto that. The bathroom is the best for me - it really looks amazing in comparison to what it used to. Sooooo much cleaner - ahhhh, it's so nice not having to look at other people's crud that, no matter how hard you scrub, just wont fucking well come off. Not to mention the crayon scribbles on the toilet wall that I always ended up looking at and getting irritated by as I sat there doing my thing. Along with the hole in the bathroom wall and one in the toilet - I would switch between crayon scribbles and hole in the toilet and always look at the hole and crud in the bathroom. Now it's all gone! HORRAY!!!!! So on the painting front we still have our room, the back entrance and laundry to do, as well as a final coat around the doors and windows in the kitchen and lounge. Oh and repaint the kitchen door where the naughty new puppy has scratched the new paint off - GGRRRRRRRRRRR. Oh and we bought a new front door and have put that on - looks great, though now we don't have a cat-door so gotta get that installed into a pane next to the french doors. Looks so much nicer with a lovely front door. Chris has nearly finished the vanity in the bathroom too, just gotta put the top piece of wood on and then it's done - we have a vanity. HORRAY!

We've spent a lot of money on plants and things are definitely looking better, after bastard horses and lambs eating all the first ones we bought. GGGGGRRRRRRRRRR! Animals. We now have predominantly lavender and roses - it's very country cottage and cute. We'll add it as we can and it will continue to progress and improve (that's the plan anyway). Things were looking great and then the dogs decided they'd annoy the piss out of us and dig one whole garden out, like it seriously was the whole fucking garden. Bastards. All the plants were totally dug out and strewn across the yard. Wow - really wanted to kill them after that. But we've replanted them and although they look pretty damned sad, they look like they're gonna survive (mostly!). And I'm talking about all of this and haven't actually taken any photos of the gardens either. Will do that too. I'll add it to the incredibly, unbelievably, dishearteningly long to-do list. hehe

Before planting all the plants that are piled up everywhere, but you can see the standard iceberg roses either side of the steps and the rocks surrounding where the garden now is - it's now full of lavender that eventually will be a lavender hedge in front of the deck. You can also see on either side of the other steps onto the deck we have more lavender in pots and the standard patio prince roses either side of the doorway. The trellis is also new (ages ago now) and we have star jasmin in pots on the far side of the BBQ to grow up the trellis, along with the pink flowered climber on this side of it, that I can't for the life of me remember the name of.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sKpYzIO-I/AAAAAAAAAd0/N6RFTRutZm0/s400/26.01.08D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159729504230849506" />

Patio prince rose - gorgeous colour huh?
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sKpYzIO_I/AAAAAAAAAd8/3J1jaVIrWsQ/s400/26.01.08E.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159729504230849522" />

One of the pink roses we have in the garden below the kitchen windows - we have alternating pink and ivory ones.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sKpozIPAI/AAAAAAAAAeE/u5seSEEbk90/s400/26.01.08F.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159729508525816834" />

Pink flowered climber guy who lives next to the BBQ :)
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sKpozIPBI/AAAAAAAAAeM/8-ZU721hnaw/s400/26.01.08G.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159729508525816850" />

Lavender.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sKp4zIPCI/AAAAAAAAAeU/aTM88T_aMS4/s400/26.01.08H.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159729512820784162" />

What else... ah fencing. We've done the top paddock fencing. We'd used three gates tied together to fence the opening off for WAY TOO LONG. Now it's finally done and feels soooooo good :) That is halfway down the drive way, so we carried on the two rail fencing and luckily enough we had enough rails for that as it wasn't a big area. Makes a huge difference and feels so much better. It was kinda embarrassing when we have the three girlies with their horses paying to keep them up there and it had that. Yay, so now it's gone.

We've also fenced the orchard with sheep netting - there was no way they were being let off in the house paddock anymore after destroying everything that was growing pretty much. So they're tethered during the day, eating the grass along the driveway down - good luck sheepies! It's all so damned overgrown and yucky to them now. But we've tie them up in the house paddock as well which they LOVE, nice short, sweet and juicy grass. They've been in here for the last three days now, to give the orchard a rest and time to grow. It's totally dry and dead now, gone from being horribly overgrown to nothing. It's good though, when it starts growing back (if we ever get enough rain!!!) it'll be good grass.

Just after we put the posts in to fence the orchard.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sQG4zIPEI/AAAAAAAAAek/F7J2bC5hrSE/s400/26.01.08J.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159735508595129410" />

Met enjoying the lush grass in the house paddock.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sQHIzIPFI/AAAAAAAAAes/2YuC006cNB4/s400/26.01.08K.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159735512890096722" />

Code wanting to know if he can eat the camera.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sQHYzIPGI/AAAAAAAAAe0/1jsIlNSMr6s/s400/26.01.08L.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159735517185064034" />

We cleared out the sheds and sorted them so we now have a workable and useable garden/wood shed and the other one is a useable sleepout which is quite cute (if you're not that fussy). We've had three different groups of people stay in it and they've all said it was great (perhaps they were just being polite! hehe). It has a queen sized bed complete with mosquito net, set of drawers, bedside cabinets and a lantern with citronella oil for lighting, along with waking up to birdsong. Nice. What more would you want? Aside from the fresh coffee and cooked breakfast we have ready for you inside :) The other half of that shed is used for storage, but it's an organised storage shed now thank god. We have a great saddle rack as well, right by the door which is long enough to hold our two adult saddles and Caelan's little one, plus it's got room for one more adult sized. It's great.

Water - one of the most important, if not the most important subjects for us. Since spring we've been bucketing water to the horses and this is frightening for us because with the lack of rain our tank will being going down and down and down and down. We're really frugal with our water use - when we wash our hands we catch the water and it gets fed to plants. All washing water gets caught, with the first load going to plants and gardens and the second being used for the next load. All dishes water gets taken out of the skin and given to plants, there is no such thing as taking a plug out and watching any water (regardless of how dirty!) go down the drain here. Showering every day is a thing of past days, days where water wasn't limited. Ahhhh how we loved our trip to Melbourne and showering every day! Along with our wee two night holiday in a hotel here - aaahhhhh the showers and being able to use water like it didn't matter. It was still always on my mind though, out of habit. But the latest exciting news is, Kevin (my father) found the bore while they were here visiting last week and there's still water down there!!!! It's so exciting! So now we just need to find a way to buy a pump and the hose needed and viola we have water for the horses, sheep and dogs (and gardens) and it wont have to come from our tank!!! YAY! So we're in the process of researching all of that and hopefully our problems will be solved. Yay :)

We also invested in a needed chainsaw - wahoo! Chris has put it to good use and has chopped up all of the fallen down trees from the fence-line of the first top paddock. We have a healthy wood pile stacked in the shed and against the wall outside. There's sooooo much more wood on the property to chop, but we'll get there.

And we've made Caelan a sandpit - it's a deep inground one that took a lot of digging. It's pretty damned deep too. He loves it. It's framed with four 6x2 planks and goes down from there. What a lucky little boy huh? Poor Chris too, as obviously he did pretty much all the digging, I helped when I could and as I could but being pregnant and the heat absolutely KILLING me I wasn't much help. I was more loosening the dirt for him to take out and wheel away. But it got done and two trailer-loads of sand later, Caelan has a sandpit.

Oh and yeah, we have a new puppy. She's the same breed as Toa (dogue de bordeaux) and is loving her country life. Her name's Mawhero (which means Pink), we wanted her to have a maori name like Toa (means Warrior). She's a lovely little girl, even though she destroys gardens! Toa's loving having a friend, although she swings off his lips at times and irritates the snot out of him. He's the most tolerant and patient dog in the world though and just lets it happen. He'll love it when she's big like him and they can play properly.

ANNNNND we bought a new outdoor dining suite and it's lovely jubbly! Our little rickety one just wasn't cutting it - we eat outside so much here (who wouldn't???? It's amazing and you'd be mad not to). The new one is great, seats six and is a really good size - we've used it HEAPS since getting it just before new years. It gets used pretty much every day and it's lovely just sitting out there talking to the birds. Our swallows who live in the front doorway now have their second set of babies - so cute! Caelan loves them and will visit them throughout the day and come back saying "Baby birds sleeping" if they're in the nest asleep. Ohhhh and speaking of birds, we have A LOT, I mean a fuck of a lot of bird visitors here. I've lost count of how many Caelan and I have gotten out of the fire place during the day. We have had a friendly fantail visitor who comes inside just to hang with us - like literally follows us into whatever room we're in. He's lovely. The swallows from the front often come in to say hi when I'm working on the computer. Sparrows will come in regularly - it's a right little bird house we have. Frank (the cat) is thrilled about it. And we've already had to save two young sparrows from the budding bird dog Mawhero.

If you just open this wee glass door I'll help it outside. Pleeeeeeease. YEAH RIGHT!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sRg4zIPHI/AAAAAAAAAe8/a7yLC4nanPc/s400/26.01.08M.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159737054783356018" />

So just don't let that dog get me huh?
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sRg4zIPII/AAAAAAAAAfE/gOahG2Lx7U0/s400/26.01.08N.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159737054783356034" />

Come on little birdy, we'll put you outside.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sRhIzIPJI/AAAAAAAAAfM/OPi1e5FnPHE/s400/26.01.08O.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159737059078323346" />

Swallow having a visit in our room, chilling on the TV.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sRhIzIPKI/AAAAAAAAAfU/9wYjoSh07I8/s400/26.01.08P.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159737059078323362" />

So that's the update on our wee farm. We've tidied up the clearing more and the set is in the middle of that, Chris has chopped up all the logs that are seen in that pic as well. It looks really cute in there now.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sTY4zIPPI/AAAAAAAAAf8/pwM1neGGvdQ/s400/26.01.08U.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159739116367658226" />

The herb tower - gotten so much use out of that recently! It's great. Though the coriander is looking pretty damned sad these days and I anything I do just doesn't help. Also one of the basil varieties is doing really badly - hopefully I'm able to revive them.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/R5sMs4zIPDI/AAAAAAAAAec/J0ntYYLXZz0/s400/26.01.08I.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159731763383647282" />

We have a garden!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/RwGW-34usUI/AAAAAAAAAZE/kPQVOzk23o0/s400/Pretty.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116536658567541058" />
Aint it pretty? A coopworth ewe called Met and a coopworth suffolk X ram called Code, they littlies (only a week and a half old) and are having four feeds a day. They've settled in and are happy with their new home, well so it seems anyway. For now they have a temporary fenced off area around the woodshed, which is where they sleep at night. Once they're big enough not to get through the wires into the horses, where they would probably get trampled by all the silly colts, we can let them have the wole house paddock. When we're outside with them they're let out in the house paddock but pretty much hang with us and follow us inside whenever we go in.

My strange water saving tactics are now habit, though with summer being on it's way we're getting scared about water! I've measured the amount of water our washing machine uses for a full load on medium water level and it's a terrifying 100 litres!!! That's just fucking shocking! So what I've been doing is bucketing the last load of water which is used in the final rinse, rather than letting it go down the drain, then I put all that back into the washing machine for the first wash cycle of the next load. So I'm using 50 litres of water per load - which still gives me the shits!!! LOL So needless to say, whenever it's raining I do washing cause I feel ok about it, but of course this means it doesn't dry for a while cause it's raining! LOL Though I do still hang it up and just leave it there till it's dry. Better than letting it sit, waiting and eventually getting yuck smelling and having to wash it again huh?!?!

We now have eight ponies and miniature horses and two thoroughbreds and two lambs. Sooooo water will be scary in summer alright!

With winter and toodler :) we haven't been able to get much done. But that will all change now, hopefully!

Here's that photo of the post and rail fence we did ages ago. The bit of frame in the edge of the photo is for Caelan's plane swing, I'll post a photo of that once it's up too, at this stage it's just a frame.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/Ru2nHKQacAI/AAAAAAAAAYc/oQZ6LOfEUIo/s400/Fence.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110924893589499906" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_fTRRG5RRlHA/Ru2nHaQacBI/AAAAAAAAAYk/NiBlPcJ0zw0/s400/Lambs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110924897884467218" />

Bbrrrrr!

Well we haven't been gobbled up and spat out by the tornadoes so that's a good thing! Whoda thought we'd have this problem here?!?! Not me that's for sure. We've had some amazing frosts which have put us in a white winter wonderland, nothing could warm us inside on those days. It's freezing and wet, and although it's dampened everything else, it hasn't managed to reach our spirits and we're still loving it. Horrah! The tank's full and so is, it seems, the septic tank - joy. The toilet is nearly blocked, I say nearly cause it isn't quite [yet] thank fuck. Really gotta check it all out this weekend and see what the problem is. Along with knocking off some more items from our "Fucking Long List of Jobs To Do" (that's it's official name I'll have you know).

So far we've done the vegetable garden and the frost has kindly killed just about every thing in it. We've wedded the front garden and found the path infront of it! hehe That was a mission - it's certainly altered the look of the house having that done. We've done some more fencing - have taken down the make-shift fence we did when we first got here to keep the horses in the big paddock and it now has a fancy new 4 wire post and batten fence. Yes indeed - that was our first "real" fence and boy oh boy we're proud. :) We don't have any fencing tools so it was done the old fashioned way without post hole borers, it was a good old spade each for Chris and I and lots of man noises thank you very much. So after some heaving, grunting and sweating we had some post holes - tis hard work but we completed our first fence and gate. Since then we've taken down the highly attractive fence that was put up around the house paddock during the Crazy Cloudy episode and there we have a very sexy 3 rail and post fence. VERY, VERY PROUD OF THIS ONE!!! So thanks to Trademe and lots of scavenging around the property and taking rails of other fences not needed at the moment we got the materials needed and have nearly finished this. Unfortunately we didn't have enough rails to go all the way around the house. That was a long, hard weekend in the rain getting it done and for the last 3 hours of the second day it really felt like work. We were grumpy as fuck and had really had enough of it all. But we did it and although we didn't finish on the high of the first day - we were still happy (through the frowns and swearing) with what we'd accomplished.

The house paddock is nearly dog-proof, hopefully this weekend we'll finish that. Got some more materials from Trademe and will be able to get it done. We'll have to finish it with rails when we get the money for more. At this stage it'll be rails and wire behind the house. It'll be so good when Toa can go outside and we know he can't get out anywhere and wander.

We've replaced the fireplace as well, the one in here didn't give off any heat at all. Chris got a year old fancy thing from work (we love them!) and took the old one out and put the new one in. LOVELY jubbly and very warm thanks very much. Ohhhh and the batts have been put above Caelan's room which definitely makes a difference. So it's slowly happening here.

The horses - Cloudy in the back, Maddy's arse, Gold on the right and Star in the front.
<img style="float:left; This is the view from lying on our couch. Who wouldn't want this?!?!?

It's so amazingly wonderful living here! We absolutely love it! Though it's FREEZING at night - the house is uninsulated and has many holes so yep we're absolutely freezing. Caelan has a bad cold due to getting used to it all - even though we constantly have a dehumidifier going in his room during the day and heater all night (whew the power bill is gonna gimme a heart attack!). So the poor boy is sick, which of course means I am too. But I wouldn't trade our new life for anything. We're soooo happy here - it's wonderful. We haven't been able to get onto anymore of the painting though - hell, we've only just finished unpacking!! LOL Well actually a week ago - lordy, lordy is hard to do that sort of stuff with a baby. And because the house is so small and noisy we can't even do it when he's asleep. So we've had to wait till Chris' parents have been able to watch him in the weekend for us and horray - that happened last weekend and we now have a house! We did Caelan's room immediately and then the kitchen was done, then the lounge and finally our room and the front entrance and hallway - which all were dumping grounds.

Ohhhhh and speaking of dumping grounds... this used to be a gang house and there were a kabillion [stolen] cars on the property when we last saw it (when my old horse used to graze here). But when we first started looking into moving here they were gone so we assumed the landlord had them moved. We have since found out from the farmer behind us that the gang buried all the stolen cars in our back paddock!!!! What the fuck?!?! He showed us where the dug 3 huge holes and buried around 200 cars - fucking mongrels. So we can't use that paddock in the winter cause if it's wet our horses could really hurt themselves as nice farmer man told us they wouldn't be very deep. GREAT. Just as well the farm is so big - we'll be fine not using that one paddock.

We've had countless dead, rotting, maggot infested mice and rats since moving in. A family rotting inside the back of the oven - nice!!!! Silly buggers were living there and got fried when the power was turned on. Of course we didn't find them till after the stench was just about killing us! Chris went in the ceiling and didn't find the rot, then under the house and didn't find the rot - though found the biggest rat carcasses that we've ever seen. But too old to be the rotting we were smelling - then after pulling the fridge out and apart and the oven out for a fourth time, took the back off and voila - rotting, maggoty mouse family. Ugh. Frank has killed about 12 since we moved in - good boy! Not that I like murderation of any creature but these dirty buggers want to walk all over the plates and spoons our boy eats off - no thank you! They were all over everything in the kitchen every night - all through the pantry and eating everything, and shitting in absolutely everything. Enough is enough! Oh and we squished one with boxes in our room and didn't find it till about a week later when it was full of maggots and very stinky. Welcome to the country huh? LOL

So what have we done since moving in... that's what I'd like to know!!!! Everywhere we look there's so much to do. On Saturday we sawed off a couple of branches of a tree that had gone a little crazy (we have many of these!) and took down a horrible old rotten treehouse. It's starting to look a little tidier in places, but then we're piling up the rubbish from these things in different places. Argh! We've pulled all the planks off one fence that was useless and half broken and started building the house fence (which will eventually contain Toa - dogs MUST NOT wander in the country, wandering dogs WILL BE shot - this is what I keep telling him). We had a big day on Saturday, building the fence at the front of the house and putting in poles for the back. Though we need to buy wire and battens to close up the gaps in the farm fences that he can go through. Ah it's a big expensive job. But we'll get there.

We now have two miniature horses, not ours but we're looking after them for my mother and my sister's given me one of her horses that she doesn't have time for. Maddy's a lovely chestnut 4 year old ex-racehorse - she arrived on Saturday (just gone). When we were buying them some feed on Saturday I saw a notice for a horse wanting to finding a good home in our area. Called the girlie and he sounded perfect, I told her we wanted a paddock mate for Maddy and ideally one quiet enough for a beginner and he'd be Chris' horse. She said he'd be brilliant, we went to see Cloudy and he's a lovley big old grey 20 year old boy. She said he's really quiet and great in the paddock with others, she told us she'd shown quiet a few people but just wanted it to be right and told us not to be offended if she said it wouldn't work. She said he's incredibly quiet, never been a problem, totally bomb proof and great in the paddock with all other horses and ponies - sounded great. Anyway after being there for 15 mins and asking all about him, checking him out she said we could have him. HORRAY!! And as we were not far away she said we could take him then. WAHOO! I walked him home - which took just under an hour I think. Then the drama begins... we introduced him to Maddy and the mini's Star and Gold, all was fine. After about 5 minutes or so we put him in the paddock with them, he went off to a corner by himself and stayed there. Then he ventured out to check out his new home, he was having a nice slow canter around looking at it all and went through a fence, fell over and freaked then bolted. The grass is long and he just didn't even see the fence, poor boy cut up his legs and galloped to the front gate. I went and got him, calmed him down and tied white indicator strips of material on the top wire all around the whole paddock, while leading him beside me so he'd know where the fence was. Chris was fixing the fence at this time - one of the few fences that was good bugger it. It had broken in about 4 places and took about an hour to fix and tie on the strips. I then let him go, all was good, the others came up to him and they were all saying hello. He then decided that he hated the miniature horses and had better just kill one of them! He bloody well tried anyway - so the four horses all galloping madly around a far too big paddock (should be four good sized ones and will be once we've got the wire and battons), he was biting and kicking the smallest and youngest one. Picking it up and throwing it to the ground, or behaps it was just falling over when he bit - not sure but it was horrible and very savage. So much for this quiet gelding! Luckily just before it all happened his old owner turned up to drop off his cover and feed - she couldn't believe her eyes. So four of us were in there trying to cut him off and catch him - it was madness. Silly boy, luckily Maddy was protecting them and trying to get inbetween them and kicking him. All a bit fullon though. He just must have freaked at their size and not known what the hell they were. Anyway all of that resulted in a makeshift fence being put up in the dark for the mini's, but Maddy wouldn't let them be anywhere without her, she was threatening to go through a fence to get to them. There was no way we were risking another fence having to be fixed so she was in the house paddock with the mini's over night. Silly horses. Chris and his Dad finished building the fences at 9pm and I sat in the paddock holding Maddy and the mini's for 3 hours. Not too good for the cold I tell ya! LOL All's ok though - we're gonna put Maddy in with Cloudy this afternoon, hopefully she'll be fine without the mini's now that it's not directly after that drama. She's strangely protective over them, considering she only just arrived on Saturday, so only had a day together. But it's as if they're her foals, if they go too far away from her she gets shitty with them and makes them come back. She wont let Toa near them and he's been their good friend for 2-3 weeks now. Funny girl.

We still don't have any water going to the paddocks, but the troughs have some in thanks to the rain and if need be we'll just fill them from our tank. The landlord put a new tank in just before we moved, like days before, which of course meant it was empty. He was going to leave it like that too and we told him that there's no way we can move in without water. So he filled it about a quarter of the way - soooooo we're doing the country thing and praying for rain. We've checked out the old bore and it's rusted and looks like it's been completely pulled out of the ground. And our plan B has backfired - we knew that a previous tenant who had water used to pay a neighbouring farmer for water as he was on town supply but we've found out that he's not happy to do this anymore as it slows down his supply too much. Damn so no plan B, we've now come up with another which is to buy another tank for the paddocks - we'll put spouting on the sheds to collect all the rain for that. But it's all money huh - so we're just doing what we can for now until we actually need the tank. We'll focus on the house, clearing out all the rubbish, getting our vege garden under way, fixing fences and then we'll suss the water.

The farm

We move in two sleeps!!!! Hurrah! It's a horrid little rundown 2 bedroom shack on an awfully overgrown 22 acre farm - but we're soooooo excited. There's heaps of work to be done but we can't wait to get into it all and be there. To be out of the suburbs and living there is going to be heaven. Horray, no more loud neighbours hoiking constantly, no shouting (we currently have the loudest family in the world next door), no street-cats (with the most cats in the world!), no parties, no cars zooming down the road, no police helicopters and sirens. HORRAY! Just birds, horses and other animals, oh and the sweet sound of small planes overhead! haha Well you can't have everything right?! LOL We're not far from a small plane airport so we'll have to get used to the planes, Chris quite likes it and I'm sure Caelan will love looking up at them too. It'll just take some getting used to. Especially in the way of Caelan's sleeps! I don't mind them either, I'd rather have them than live in Panmure any day!

Yesterday Chris' Dad and Grandad went out there and painted the kitchen and lounge while we stayed in the ghetto and packed. I can't wait to see it - it'll look beautiful! They're wonderful and that was a huge help - you guys rock! Thanks so much. We're really looking forward to getting in and finishing the rest of the house!

Here are some photos taken last Saturday before the working bee on Caelan's room - thanks to the two Scott's and CJ!!!! You guys are wonderful :) Your help was soooo great, and CJ - thanks for the food, beer, wine, music and deodorant - all vital ingredients to hard work. Unfortuntely I didn't take many photos of inside as we were just too busy to be stuffin' around taking photos! The last one is a closeup of a section of the lounge wall, AFTER VIGOROUS SCRUBBING!!! And that's not even a bad part, there aren't any holes or anything in that part! hehe The whole inside is the most disgusting I've ever seen anything and took a whole lot of scrubbing - to not look much different after all that hard work and sweat (thanks CJ again!). But after painting Caelan's room it looks amazing - it didn't look like it should have been in that house.

<img style="float:left;
